This procedure aims to save thousands of patients from the type of knee surgery that currently leads to premature osteoarthritis.
Azellon’s meniscal repair technology combines a patient’s own bone marrow stem cells with a special membrane that helps to deliver the cells into the injured site, and cannot be rejected by the immune system.

The first prototype instrument has been approved by Prof Ashley Blom and Prof Anthony Hollander, who are hoping to be able to commence clinical trials later in the year.

International Children’s Heart Foundation chooses surgical instruments by Platts & Nisbett

Tue, 08/05/2012 - 15:24

ICHF ImagePlatts & Nisbett is pleased to be working with the International Children’s Heart Foundation to supply specialist cardiovascular instrumentation. Our Company was chosen by the charity as they required a specialist piece of cardiac kit for an upcoming medical mission trip.

The charity was set up in 1994 to deliver the skills and technologies needed to treat children with congenital heart disease in developing countries around the world. As one percent of the world’s population is born with heart disease this makes it the most common birth defect. Many congenital heart defects can be repaired with one surgical intervention, but some require staged repairs. The developed countries of the world have hundreds of hospitals with trained specialists to care for children with heart disease, however for children who are born in developing nations this is not the case. Over the years, its founder Dr William Novick has worked with hundreds of medical volunteers to save the lives of thousands of children living in these areas. Without the work of charities such as this, these children would not survive.

We would like to wish the charity well for their upcoming medical missions. For more information about the work carried out by the International Children’s Heart Foundation, please visit www.babyheart.org

Don’t Shoulder the burden, give difficult revisions the Elbow!

Wed, 01/08/2012 - 15:03

SSE UpdatePlatts & Nisbett is pleased to report a dramatic increase in the number of surgeons wishing to loan and purchase the Sheffield Shoulder and Elbow Revision Kit; the first of its kind specifically designed for Shoulder and Elbow Arthroplasty surgery.

Following its launch in 2010 at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, the kit has grown in popularity, with the first six months of 2012 showing an increase in the number of loans up by 400%. With word now spreading amongst the surgeons we have found ourselves inundated with enquiries from hospitals who now wish to try it.

By taking advantage of this short term loan the surgeons are able to evaluate the instruments before the trust commits to any purchase. However after loaning the kit a few times the majority of hospitals have then decided to purchase one, as this is the more cost effective option in the long term. It also means they always have their own kit available whenever they need it, significantly helping surgeons who have come to rely on it when undertaking difficult revision procedures.

The advantages of this new kit are clear. Clinically, it offers the surgeon a solution to the problems encountered during difficult and time consuming shoulder and elbow revision surgery, where visualisation is limited. Financially, not only are our new kits covered by the standard Five Year Warranty, they also have the benefit of our unique Free Lifetime Sharpening Guarantee, something which is not offered by any other manufacturer. This ensures the kit is always kept in top condition for surgical use, at no additional cost to the budget holder.

Please click here for more details on the kit itself, or contact us to arrange a loan or purchase. Early booking is advised if you would like to loan a kit, due to its increasing popularity and demand.

Thirteen Children saved, one heart at a time

Tue, 19/02/2013 - 14:48

ICHF SurgeonPlatts & Nisbett is proud to support the International Children’s Heart Foundation (ICHF), by providing surgical instruments for their mission trips around the world.

During a recent Babyheart mission trip to Najaf (Iraq), thirteen children received life saving operations which were carried out using Platts & Nisbett surgical instruments.

The team of twelve, which was led by Paediatric Cardiovascular Surgeon Dr William Novick, visited the Al-Sadr Teaching Hospital to treat children with congenital heart defects. In addition, the volunteer doctors and nurses worked alongside local staff, teaching them the latest techniques in order for them to offer this care themselves in the future.

The thirteen children, aged between two months and fifteen years, all received life saving operations which would not have been possible without the work of the International Children’s Heart Foundation. Doctor Novick and his team carried out various procedures, including Tetralogy of Fallot repair, Patent Ductus Arteriosis Ligation, and Atrioventricular Septal Defect Repair. ICHF has provided life changing care to these children, who now have the chance to go on and live normal happy lives.

Our surgical instruments have travelled around the world with the Babyheart team and aided ICHF in carrying out their life saving missions. We are pleased to play a part in such a worthy cause, and look forward to assisting further in the future.

Italy Has a Keen Eye for Quality

Tue, 19/03/2013 - 18:33

Italian EyePlatts & Nisbett was delighted to welcome our Italian Distributors, GVT Medical to our manufacturing facility in Sheffield recently.

Our apprentice trained craftsmen were able to showcase their skills, and demonstrate all the extra touches that make a Platts & Nisbett instrument the choice of surgeons worldwide.

Throughout the factory tour GVT were able to see the surgical instruments being manufactured in detail, and were amazed by the incredible quality and commitment that goes into each and every one.

During some recent market research, GVT offered Platts & Nisbett handmade vascular instruments to professionals in Italy, along with those of some competitors. Without knowing the brands 100% of surgeons asked chose Platts & Nisbett surgical instruments as their preference.

We look forward to working with GVT to make our vascular instruments widely and routinely available in Italy.

The Next Apprentice

Fri, 12/04/2013 - 18:31

ApprenticeshipsPlatts & Nisbett is pleased to welcome our new apprentice to the team. Following 14 weeks of full time training at the Brinsworth Academy of Engineering, our new recruit is ready to begin his onsite training at Platts & Nisbett.

Our Company will be working with Brinsworth Academy for the next three years, to ensure our apprentice is given all the guidance and training required to achieve his NVQ Levels 2 and 3. Our apprentice has been assigned a mentor, and will receive one to one training from surgical instrument makers with over 30 years experience. We feel by combining modern apprenticeship learning methods with our own traditional hand crafted skills, we are able to offer our apprentices a great opportunity for a fulfilling career in the future.

A dedicated workshop specifically for our apprentices and their mentors provides an excellent teaching environment. Apprentices learn the vital skills required to produce only the best surgical instruments, working alongside mentors and peers as part of a valued team.

An apprenticeship with Platts & Nisbett lasts approximately 6 years, and it is instilled into them that quality is key. By setting high standards our Company can ensure that a consistent quality product is produced in the years to come. As apprentices progress, they are gradually assigned jobs of a higher complexity. Only when competent can the apprentice move on to the next stage, and work with slightly less supervision. Once they are qualified and begin to gain experience they can then take on the additional responsibility of teaching an apprentice themselves. This continuous cycle is vital in order to protect a trade which would otherwise disappear.

Although it is a time consuming and labour intensive process, the time spent teaching is an investment for the future. As there are very few original manufacturers of quality surgical instruments in the UK, our Company views the apprenticeship scheme as essential to avoid skill gaps in the future.

We look forward to teaching the next generation of skilled surgical instrument makers who can produce items worthy of carrying the Platts & Nisbett name.

Free Lifetime Sharpening gives us the edge

Wed, 08/05/2013 - 18:29

Free lifetime sharpeningDemand for the Platts & Nisbett Free Lifetime Sharpening Service has never been so high. Following its introduction two years ago, we have seen a dramatic rise in the number of hospitals taking advantage of this unique service.

At Platts & Nisbett we pride ourselves on the quality of surgical instruments we manufacture; and it is for this reason that we offer a Free Lifetime Sharpening Service on all Osteotomes, Chisels and Gouges bearing our name. We make sure our instruments remain fit for purpose and are not subject to substandard repair work carried out elsewhere. Not only does this keep the instruments in the best condition, it also ensures their warranty remains fully intact.

All work is carried out by highly skilled Platts & Nisbett staff at no additional cost to the customer. Once the product has been purchased this unique after sales service means you can rest assured there will be no hidden costs later on. With budgets becoming ever tighter there has never been a better time to take advantage of this significant cost saving. This is another advantage of dealing directly with the original manufacturer.

Many orthopaedic surgeons use the Platts & Nisbett brand of instruments by choice, and now insist that any repair work is done by us. As we use only the finest grade of surgical steel to manufacture these instruments, they do not require sharpening as often as some other instruments. However they can be returned as often as you like with no limits. All we ask is that they are returned to us with the relevant decontamination certificates, and we will do the rest.

Please speak to one of our customer service representatives if you would like more information.

Laser Welding Service - Platts & Nisbett - Now Available

Mon, 24/06/2013 - 18:27

Laser welder 2Platts & Nisbett has recently invested in a new state of the art laser welding system, which complements our existing TIG welding system.

The Piccolaser is very precise; set parameters can be called up at the touch of a button, and laser instant adjustments can be carried out immediately. In contrast to conventional welding, a homogenous melt is produced at the fusion point of the materials to be joined. This delivers an optimum result without discolouration, spots or beads.

The system has a compact construction, yet comes with four integrated motorised axes, that allow exceptionally high repeat accuracy. This ability to handle extremely small details makes it the perfect piece of kit for our high quality surgical instruments.

The laser welding service is now carried out at our premises in Sheffield by fully trained Platts & Nisbett staff. We are also able to offer a laser welding sub contract service with fast turnaround times. If this service is of interest to you we would be happy to provide a quotation upon request.

Babyheart Team Heal 11 Broken Hearts

Thu, 27/06/2013 - 18:25

ICHF Macedonia

Platts & Nisbett is proud to support the International Children’s Heart Foundation (ICHF), by providing surgical instruments for their mission trips around the world.

The International Children’s Heart Foundation recently made their first Babyheart Mission Trip to Skopje (Macedonia), carrying out life saving surgery using Platts & Nisbett surgical instruments

Led by Cardiovascular Surgeon Dr William Novick, the team consisted of one perfusionist, one intensivist, one anaesthesiologist, one respiratory therapist, one cardiologist, one biomedical engineer, one scrub nurse, one PICU nurse educator and four PICU nurses. The team came from four different countries, joining together to save the lives of eleven children with congenital heart defects. The team worked alongside the local staff at the University Clinic of Pediatric Surgery, to teach them the latest techniques in taking care of children with these conditions.

The eleven children received life saving operations which would not have been possible without the work of the International Children’s Heart Foundation. Ten out of the eleven children were under one year old, with the youngest being only fifteen days. The team carried out various procedures, including VSD Closure, MPA Patching & Pulmonary Artery Debanding, and Senning Atrial Switch. Without surgical intervention, these children would have a poor quality of life and be likely to suffer from heart failure before adulthood. Due to the work of the International Children’s Heart Foundation, these children can now go on to live normal healthy lives.

To find out more about this Babyheart Mission Trip to Macedonia, please click here.

Trip Reports on future Babyheart Missions will follow, as Platts & Nisbett surgical instruments continue to travel around the world with the Babyheart team. We are pleased to be one of the many supporters assisting the charity in carrying out their life saving work.

If you can help the International Children’s Heart Foundation in any way, please visit www.babyheart.org.

An Independent design cuts close to the bone

Sun, 01/09/2013 - 18:23

Independent LogoPlatts & Nisbett surgical instruments have recently been featured in The Independent; gaining recognition for our work with MidTECH, the NHS Innovations Hub for the West Midlands.

Last year, The Department of Health asked the six NHS Regional Innovation Centres to submit their 10 most successful product innovations. Platts & Nisbett is thrilled to be one of the four chosen to be published in The Independent.

The concept for the new surgical instrument was brought to Platts & Nisbett following a request from Miss Deepa Bose, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon based at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. Miss Bose and her colleague Simon Williams had an idea for a new medical device to aid in the debridement of bone cavities.

The procedure involved cutting a small aperture into the surface of the bone, allowing the surgeon to access the cavity and remove infected tissue from inside. The surgical instruments previously available made this difficult, as they tended to be straight and rigid, therefore making it difficult to access the bone cavity and remove infected tissue from the inner walls of the bone.

Miss Bose and MidTECH chose to work with Platts & Nisbett due to the high quality of our surgical instruments and our willingness to discuss new ideas. Following these discussions the design for the first prototype Birmingham Bone Scraper was agreed and manufacture was completed shortly afterwards. The new surgical instrument has adjustable hinges that allow for extra dexterity when working in bone cavities.

The idea and its intellectual property have now been licensed to Platts & Nisbett, with royalties for any future sales going to the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

The Datalogic Ulyxe Laser Marking System has a compact diode-pumped solid-state laser and integrated high precision industrial scan head. The Ulyxe Editor software has been written specifically for laser marking, and is dedicated to the execution of files in both vector and raster formats. Functions include full laser parameter and control setting, linear and curved marking, and Bar Code and Data Matrix code creation.

Surgical Instruments, proud to be Made in Britain

Wed, 01/01/2014 - 18:16

Made in Britain logo

Platts & Nisbett is delighted to support the newly launched Made in Britain Campaign, which aims to promote and support manufacturing in the UK. Following our application and subsequent acceptance we have now received official approval to use the Made in Britain marque.

The non-profit organisation is being run by a committee of Directors from UK based manufacturers, as well as leaders of other groups which support British Trade and Industry. It galvanises efforts from other pro-UK industry groups to build on the success of a previous Made in Britain Campaign headed by British cooker manufacturer Stoves.

The new Made in Britain logo takes inspiration from the union flag, and is designed to work across a range of media and materials. This makes it suitable to be used on a wide range of products such as clothing and furniture to surgical instruments.

The Made in Britain marque enables customers to recognise goods that are manufactured in Great Britain. The campaign aims to give customers verification of the provenance of British made goods, so they are then able to make an informed decision prior to purchase.

By joining the Made in Britain Campaign and using the Made in Britain marque, Platts & Nisbett is thrilled to champion our authentic British Surgical Instruments and keep manufacturing skills, crafts and innovation alive.

Babyheart Gives Russia The Gift of Hope

Sat, 01/02/2014 - 18:13

ICHF Russia Ignat Sleeping

Platts & Nisbett is delighted to support the International Children’s Heart Foundation, by providing surgical instruments for their mission trips around the world.

The International Children’s Heart Foundation recently made their inaugural mission trip to Voronezh in Russia, healing the hearts of twelve children with congenital heart disease.

The Babyheart team, led by cardiovascular heart surgeon and ICHF Founder, Dr. William Novick, consisted of one intensivist, two anaesthesiologists, one perfusionist, one scrub nurse, one cardiologist, one respiratory therapist, one PICU nurse educator, five PICU nurses, and one biomedical engineer. The team came from six different countries, all joining together for one cause – to save the lives of children with congenital heart defects.

During the team’s first visit to the Voronezh Regional Hospital, twelve children received operations. Additionally, the volunteer doctors and nurses from the Babyheart team worked alongside the local staff teaching them the latest techniques in caring for children with these heart conditions.

The twelve children received life saving surgery which would not have been possible without the outstanding work of the International Children’s Heart Foundation. The children were all aged two years or below, with the youngest patient being only nine days old. The team carried out procedures such as ASD Closure, TOF Repair, VSD Closure and PDA Ligation. Without surgical intervention, children with congenital heart defects are forced to struggle on a daily basis, until their hearts become too weak and eventually fail. However due to the amazing work of the International Children’s Heart Foundation, these children can now go on to live healthy and normal lives.

The Babyheart team look forward to returning to Veronezh in the future, to perform life changing surgery on more children, giving them renewed hope of a bright future.

Workforce expands to meet growing demand for Platts & Nisbett Surgical Instruments

Mon, 14/07/2014 - 00:07
P&N News 2014

Platts & Nisbett is currently expanding its workforce in order to meet increasing demand for our high quality surgical instruments.

Having recently advertised a position for an experienced surgical instrument fitter, we are now delighted to have filled a vacancy.

Our new surgical instrument fitter has over 20 years experience, gained during invaluable time served within the surgical instrument trade. This unique experience can only be gained by spending time in the industry, learning from mentors who have a passion for making surgical instruments. Although technology is ever improving it is the handmade aspect of producing a surgical instrument which is essential. This can only be mastered by years of practice, and we are pleased to welcome another craftsman to our team.

Platts & Nisbett is also working with Brinsworth Academy of Engineering to find our next apprentice. Our vacancy is currently being advertised and we will shortly be carrying out interviews and practical assessments.

Our dedicated teaching workshop provides an excellent environment for our apprentices to learn the vital skills required to produce only the best surgical instruments. Working alongside mentors and peers they learn not only a trade but important life skills, becoming part of a valued team in the process. An apprenticeship with Platts & Nisbett lasts approximately 6 years. Once they are qualified and have gained enough experience they can then take on the additional responsibility of becoming a mentor, and teach an apprentice themselves.

By combining these modern apprenticeship learning methods with our own traditional hand crafted skills, we are able to offer our apprentices a great opportunity for a fulfilling career in the future.

Our combination of both youth and experience ensures we avoid any potential future skills gaps in order to protect the UK surgical instrument trade, which may otherwise disappear. Platts & Nisbett surgical instruments are handmade in the UK using the finest ethically sourced materials and comply with all Ethical Trade and Labour Assurance Standards.

Total Orthopaedic Solutions Framework

Tue, 20/01/2015 - 00:04
Total Orthopaedic Solutions Framework

Platts & Nisbett is pleased to announce that we have been awarded a place on the first Total Orthopaedic Solutions Framework. Orthopaedics is a key category within NHS clinical procurement, and offers many challenges within a fragmented landscape. The Total Orthopaedic Solutions project and subsequent Framework is an initiative which has been led by NOE CPC to implement a nationally accessible agreement for all aspects of Orthopaedics.

This Framework Agreement is the result of collaboration between four NHS Hubs; NHS North of England Commercial Procurement Collaborative (NOE CPC), NHS London Procurement Partnership (LPP), NHS Commercial Solutions and East of England NHS Collaborative Procurement Hub (EOE CPH). These hubs have worked together as the NHS Collaborative Procurement Partnership (CPP), and represent around 60% of the NHS in England.

The framework covers ten different lots and has been developed to meet the various requirements of a broad range of NHS trusts. The scope of the project was developed by a cross-hub group of procurement and clinical experts, and the final awarded framework includes Orthopaedic Hip Arthroplasty, Orthopaedic Knee Arthroplasty, Orthopaedic Extremities Arthroplasty, Orthopaedic Trauma, Implants and Consumables, Spine, Arthroscopy / Sports Medicine, Bone Preparation, Orthopaedic Power Tools and Consumables, Regenerative Technology and Orthopaedic Generic Instrumentation.

Trusts can work with the North of England Commercial Procurement Collaborative (NOE CPC) to undertake comprehensive rationalisation of their orthopaedic products to ensure a more effective management of their orthopaedic supply chain, benefitting from continued cost reduction and efficiency savings.

Platts and Nisbett is delighted that our large range of Orthopaedic Generic Instrumentation is now available to purchase through the Total Orthopaedic Solutions Framework. As we are an original equipment manufacturer we can offer unique value added services such as Free Lifetime Sharpening on all our Osteotomes, Chisels and Gouges, and during the contract we will also be running various promotional offers to member trusts.

Surgeons’ Hall Museums Exhibit Platts & Nisbett Surgical Instruments

Mon, 05/10/2015 - 00:01
Surgeons Hall Museums

Platts & Nisbett Surgical Instruments can now be seen on display in the Surgeons’ Hall Museums in Edinburgh.

Surgeons’ Hall Museums are situated in the iconic William Playfair building and are owned by The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. They consist of the Wohl Pathology Museum, the History of Surgery Museum and the Dental Collection.

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh was founded in 1505, with the Museums’ collections growing significantly from 1699 after ‘natural and artificial curiosities’ were publically sought. In the 1800’s the original museum expanded to include the remarkable collections of surgeon and anatomists, Sir Charles Bell and John Barclay.

Originally developed as a teaching museum for students of medicine, Surgeons’ Hall Museums’ collections have been open to the public since 1832, and now house one of the largest and most historic collections in the UK.

With support from the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2014, the Museums underwent a major redevelopment called The Lister Project. This project was an initiative by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and focused on the College’s heritage, evolving from a 500 year old history. It helped create a new and enhanced public space within the Museums to inform and share with the general public the historical journey of surgery and its advances.

The Surgeons’ Hall Museums have now reopened following the 18 month redevelopment, with interactive displays alongside the UK’s largest collection of surgical instruments, artworks and pathological special specimens.

We are thrilled that Platts & Nisbett surgical instruments have been chosen to feature in the collection, and are pleased to show them alongside our ‘How It’s Made’ Film which is also part of the exhibition.

Platts and Nistet 40 years

40 years in business is a genuine milestone for any Company, especially for one in a competitive and challenging manufacturing industry. As in many sectors, genuine British Manufacturers like ourselves have to compete with companies who sell lower cost/lower quality alternatives on a daily basis. The longevity of our business is testament to our Company’s commitment to quality and exceptional customer service.

Of course, none of this would be possible without our workforce. Each and every member of our apprentice trained team makes a valuable contribution every day, continuing to build our reputation for the manufacture of the finest quality surgical instruments. We continue to invest heavily in training and are always looking for skilled surgical instrument makers and engineers to join our team.

Platts & Nisbett began in 1977 by manufacturing surgical instruments for other companies in the trade. Over the last 20 years we have evolved our business, and now supply directly to retail (hospitals) as well. We now have an established customer base of Trade Companies, NHS and Private Sector Hospitals, and in addition have developed an Export Portfolio and Distributor Network overseas.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our trade and retail customers for their business over the last four decades. From loyal customers who have bought Platts & Nisbett Surgical Instruments since 1977, through to ones who have built new relationships with us in recent times, we look forward to many more successful years of business ahead.

British Hip Society Meeting - Mako Robot and SPAIRE Hip Technique

Mon, 18/02/2019 - 15:43
British Hip Society Logo

There is a seminar on the Mako Robot and tendon preserving surgery (including SPAIRE) at the British Hip Society Meeting on 27th February 2019. www.britishhipsociety.com

The SPAIRE technique (Sparing Piriformis And Internus, Repair Externus) involves a muscle sparing posterior approach to the hip.

The tendons traditionally divided at the time of a hip replacement through a posterior surgical approach are now known to be of importance in rising from the seated position and for propulsive motions. A tendon-sparing technique has been developed which is appropriate for all routine primary hip replacement cases which Saves Piriformis And (Obturator) Internus with Repair of (Obturator) Externus (SPAIRE technique). Hip arthroplasty can now be performed leaving the major tendons around the hip intact.

SPAIRE Hip Instruments have been designed in conjunction with Mr John Timperley (Exeter Hip Unit), and are manufactured exclusively under license by Platts & Nisbett. They have been designed to allow good socket exposure and femoral preparation without damage to muscles and tendons.

This range of instruments is exclusively available via Platts & Nisbett or our authorised Distributors overseas. All genuine SPAIRE Hip Instruments are laser marked with the Platts & Nisbett Logo and the SPAIRE Registered Trademark.

Why choose Platts & Nisbett Self Retaining Retractors?

Mon, 04/03/2019 - 14:09
Self Retaining Retractor Rack

Self Retaining Retractors are used to hold an incision open while the surgeon works. Therefore, quality and reliability are key.

Platts & Nisbett manufactures thousands of retractors every year, and each one is individually made by hand in Sheffield.

Some variations of self retaining retractors include:

West Retractor, Weislander Retractor, Travers Retractor, Mollison Retractor, Norfolk & Norwich Retractor, Henderson Retractor, Jefferson Retractor, Plester Jansen Retractor, Gelpi Retractor, Browse Retractor, Harvey Jackson Retractor and many more.

So why are Platts & Nisbett self retaining retractors so well known for their quality?

What key features make our retractors stand out from the rest?

Firstly, we use only the highest quality raw materials; our Stainless Steel conforms with International Quality Standards in accordance with ISO 7153-1, and is fully traceable.

Then it’s all the extra touches, the attention to detail, the hand craft we put in to each and every one. The “set” or tension of the instruments is so important, and perfecting this can only be done by time served Surgical Instrument Makers.

RETRACTOR RACK & TRIGGER MECHANISMS

All Platts & Nisbett Self Retaining Retractors are rigorously tested throughout manufacture and prior to despatch. Each rack and trigger are individually filed by hand, ensuring that the correct radius is achieved. This ensures smooth operation of the instrument, and guarantees that the retractor will not slip during use.

RETRACTOR TEETH

Teeth are bent by hand. We ensure that the teeth intermesh correctly, so the Retractor can be opened and closed with ease. Perfectly formed teeth mean that the incision can be opened in a safe and controlled way during surgery.

If you’re already using our self retaining retractors, then congratulations on making a great choice. These surgical instruments will serve you well for many years to come.

If you haven’t tried them yet, why not browse our Retractor Section https://www.plattsnisbett.com/products/retractors to see the range we have on offer.

Happy 18th Birthday to our first Female Engineer!

Mon, 04/03/2019 - 15:21
Female Engineer

Happy 18th Birthday to our latest apprentice, our first female engineer.

She is Platts & Nisbett’s first female surgical instrument maker, and to our knowledge, the only female in the country who is learning how to make surgical instruments by hand.

In last year’s Apprentice Interviews, she scored the highest of all candidates in our practical test, and was chosen from a group of strong applicants.

An apprenticeship at Platts & Nisbett takes Five Years to complete. During her first year, the focus has been on learning to how to make Atraumatic Clamps which are used to clamp vessels during surgery. These instruments are used to stop the flow of blood during surgery, and once removed must not cause damage to the vessel. The quality must be exacting, and this is something we teach from day one.

Visit www.plattsnisbett.com/behind-the-scenes to see our apprentices in action.

1 in 10 girls think that STEM careers are jobs for boys, so it would be great to change that perception. With the theme for International Women’s Day 2019 being #BalanceforBetter, let’s inspire the next generation of female engineers #WomenInSTEM.

SPAIRE® Hip Instruments - Exclusively Available at Platts & Nisbett!

Wed, 20/03/2019 - 13:31
SPAIRE Hip Instruments

SPAIRE Hip Instruments are exclusively available to purchase at Platts & Nisbett.

The SPAIRE technique (Sparing Piriformis And Internus, Repair Externus) involves a muscle sparing posterior approach to the hip. Fewer tendons are damaged using the SPAIRE technique than any other approach to the hip as it involves division (and subsequent repair) of only one small tendon. This technique allows patients to mobilise without any post-operative restriction to their activities.

SPAIRE surgical instruments, designed in conjunction with Mr John Timperley (Exeter Hip Unit) are manufactured exclusively under license by Platts & Nisbett. Our skilled Sheffield craftsmen individually hand make each instrument to exacting requirements.

The SPAIRE Kit (PN2932) is supplied in a Sterilisation Container, and consists of: -

Surgical Instrument Making added to the HCA Red List of Endangered Crafts

Wed, 20/03/2019 - 14:37
HCA Red LIst

From blacksmithing to basketry, from weaving to woodturning, we have an incredible range of heritage craft skills in the UK and some of the best craftspeople in the world. But many of these skills are in the hands of an ageing population.

In 2015, the Heritage Crafts Association received a grant from The Radcliffe Trust to assess the vitality of traditional heritage crafts in the UK and identify those crafts most at risk of disappearing.

The assessment of the vitality of each craft, from those which are currently viable to those which are critically endangered has been made with the help of craftspeople, craft organisations, heritage professionals, funding bodies and members of the public who contributed to the research.

For the purposes of this research, a heritage craft is defined as ‘a practice which employs manual dexterity and skill and an understanding of traditional materials, design and techniques, and which has been practised for two or more successive generations’.

The research focuses on craft practices which are taking place in the UK at the present time, including those crafts which have originated elsewhere, and on those aspects of each craft with a high reliance on hand-work and which involve high levels of hand skill.

In May 2017 the HCA published The Red List of Endangered Crafts, the first research of its kind in the UK. This research enabled the Heritage Craft Association to shine a light on this important aspect of the UK’s collective intangible heritage that has, until now, been languishing in the dark.

It is hoped that this research will act as a call to action to those who have it within their power to resolve or alleviate these issues, and that this project will mark the start of long-term monitoring of heritage craft viability and a shared will to avoid the cultural loss that is borne each time a craft dies.

In March 2019 a major update was published, increasing the number of crafts examined to 212, with one new extinct craft, 16 new critically endangered crafts and 20 new endangered crafts (including Surgical Instrument making) added.

It has been our pleasure to provide our input to the HCA, and we are pleased to be featured in the HCA Red List of Endangered Crafts 2019 Edition. We continue to run our successful apprenticeship scheme, to ensure our skills can be passed to the next generation. Our Surgical Instruments are used not only in Britain, but worldwide, so it is essential that we invest in training and protect our craft.

Crafts need support, if you would like to find out more, please click on the links below.

Book a Factory Tour! Learn how to spot the makers from the fakers.

Fri, 05/07/2019 - 13:02
Original Manufacturer

We believe it is important that customers know the real origin of their surgical instruments. That is why we have an open-door policy, with full transparency.

Companies who sell Surgical Instruments are usually either original manufacturers or own brand labellers.

An original manufacturer is self explanatory. These surgical instruments are actually manufactured by the company who is selling them. They will have a physical manufacturing facility that you should be able to visit. Platts & Nisbett is an original manufacturer.

An own brand labeller is a company who buys surgical instruments from an original manufacturer, and then sells it on under their own brand. These are basically supply companies with a sales force.

Both of these routes to market are fine, and upcoming regulatory changes in 2020 should make the whole system clearer for end users.

The confusion can start when a company implies they are the original manufacturer – when in fact they are an own brand labeller. You may think these surgical instruments are manufactured by themselves, but they may be purchased from elsewhere (including both UK and overseas) and simply rebranded and repackaged. This can be quite misleading to the end user, so it’s important to know what to look for.

The only way to be confident that the instruments are being made at a company, is to visit it yourself. So how do you know the real makers? Read on to learn about the tell tale signs, which only real manufacturers can show you.

Firstly, ask to see the raw materials. These come in the form of Stainless Steel Bars, Sheets, Forgings etc. Then follow the paper trail and look at the stainless steel certificates. These are from the original steel mill, and show the chemical composition of the metal. This gives a good indication of the authenticity, and all original manufacturers should hold these.

Then it is important to see how a product is made, see it come to life. Look for the teeth being hand filed on cardiovascular clamps, watch how self retaining retractor racks and triggers are made. See the actual assembly / filing & fitting of the product prior to the finishing processes such as polishing and bead blasting. That is how you can tell who the authentic surgical instrument makers are.

If you have ever visited a manufacturer who shows repairs, or polishing, ask yourself if you think they actually made the product. Or did they just unpack a box from a supplier, and then show you someone polishing an instrument from another manufacturer? Can you see instruments in the early stages, not just ones ready for finishing?

Assess the manufacturing environment. Do the machines look like they are used? Can you smell the unmistakeable aroma of stainless steel and oil? Can you see craftsmen at work benches using traditional hand tools such as hammers and files?

Understanding your supply chain is vital when it comes to purchasing your surgical instruments, and there are various options and routes to market available.

Products can be bought directly from Platts & Nisbett, the original manufacturer, and this is a cost effective way to purchase.

For our Company and the end users, full transparency can only be a good thing. We have invested heavily in our Quality System and Apprenticeship programme over many years, and believe our stance on only selling high quality, fully traceable surgical instruments will stand us in good stead.

This week we welcomed groups from Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust to our manufacturing facility, to show them real British Manufacturing.

Our factory tours are highly recommended, and are a real eye opener to SSD Staff, Theatre Staff, Procurement, Surgeons, Nurses etc. The groups we met this week were enthusiastic to learn more about the manufacture of British Surgical Instruments. The knowledge they gained during these training days will help them carry out their daily tasks in SSD, and give them an appreciation of how much work goes into a high quality surgical instrument.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you would like to book a place on one of our factory tours.

Spire Healthcare learns how Surgical Instruments are Made in Britain

Wed, 11/12/2019 - 11:18
Surgical Instrument Manufacturing

Spire Healthcare has 39 hospitals & 1 specialist cancer centre across the UK. As they purchase Platts & Nisbett surgical instruments they contacted us to see if they could take part in a factory tour to see how the instruments are made. As we are the only UK Surgical Instrument Manufacturer with the official Made In Britain Accreditation, our factory tours are highly recommended. They are a real eye opener to anyone working with surgical instruments, for example SSD Staff, Theatre Staff, Procurement, Surgeons, Nurses etc.

We believe it is important that customers know the real origin of their surgical instruments, so were more than happy to oblige. Last week we hosted a training day (including a factory tour) for Spire Healthcare SSD staff at our Sheffield factory.

They enjoyed watching our skilled craftsmen hand making British Surgical Instruments, and were surprised to see how much skill is involved. Before they see for themselves, our visitors often assume that surgical instruments are produced by machine. However, that couldn't be further from the truth. Each one is handmade individually, and Platts & Nisbett Craftsmen have spent a lifetime learning, practicing, and then teaching traditional techniques which take years to master. Over the last 40 Years, Platts & Nisbett Surgical Instruments have become synonymous with Quality.

Our visitors learnt that we use only the highest quality raw materials; stainless steel conforming with international quality standards, which is fully traceable.

Then they witnessed the attention to detail. The hand craft we put in to each and every one. If we know it functions well, and it “feels right” then the surgeon will be happy with it. Well made, well balanced Surgical Instruments are always so much appreciated in Operating Theatres.

Of course, being able to judge how the instrument feels is only something we know from our years of experience. The “set” or tension of the instruments is so important, and perfecting this can only be done by time served Surgical Instrument Makers. How many Surgical Instrument Companies can show you this?

This group were keen to learn, and gained knowledge that will help them carry out their daily tasks in SSD. They even said it would make them appreciate their surgical instruments more, now they have seen how much care goes into each and every one. By the end of the day they understood why it takes 5 years for our apprentices to qualify as surgical instrument makers.

It was a pleasure to spend time with this group. We look forward to manufacturing more surgical instruments for Spire Healthcare in the future, and would like to thank them for supporting UK Manufacturing and buying British Surgical Instruments.

The Only Surgical Instrument Maker with Official Made in Britain Accreditation!

Wed, 11/12/2019 - 13:30
Made In Britain Certificate

Platts & Nisbett is the only British Surgical Instrument Manufacturer with the official Made in Britain accreditation, and we are proud of it!

The Made in Britain marque is only accredited to businesses who can prove they are selling goods which have been truly manufactured in Britain.

It is protected and can only be used by members of Made in Britain who meet strict criteria to guarantee they are a British manufacturer. There are similar marks being used by organisations that wish to emulate the success of the Made in Britain mark. These copy-cat marks are not registered or protected and do not provide the guarantees given by the official Made in Britain organisation.

Being awarded this official accreditation makes it clear to our customers that we are genuinely making our Surgical Instruments in Britain. They can be confident of the origin of Platts & Nisbett Surgical Instruments.

A recent study, commissioned by Made in Britain, found that more than a third of people admitted they don’t know when something is, or isn’t made in Britain,

John Pearce, CEO of Made in Britain, said: “It’s so great to see how encouraging the nation is of buying products sourced and produced on their doorstep, with more than half of respondents saying they like to support businesses based in Britain”.

Eight in 10 would like to buy more British-made products than they already do. But despite this, 85 per cent don’t always consider where something is from before committing to a purchase.

The majority of respondents (86 per cent), polled via OnePoll, agreed it’s important to try and buy British, with four in 10 saying British-made products are better quality than those produced in other locations.

Mr Pearce added, “There’s certainly a lot of confusion around brands which have a British heritage and those of which are still produced in Britain. Similarly, it can be confusing around which goods are manufactured in Britain, regardless of their founding origin. We want to help create transparency between retailer and consumer – Made in Britain was launched to give a clear ‘stamp of approval’ for quality, British-made products”.

NHS & Private Sector hospitals can benefit from significant cost savings, and get more value for money by choosing British Surgical Instruments. We are continuing to educate them on the advantages of choosing the quality of British Surgical instruments over the cost of the imported ranges.

We are delighted to receive our Made in Britain Certificate for another year, and look forward to contributing to the success of British Manufacturing in 2020.

Sheffield Shoulder & Elbow Revision Kit

Tue, 07/01/2020 - 11:22
Sheffield Shoulder & Elbow Revision Kit

Platts & Nisbett work with surgeons to build long lasting partnerships for the future. By using their clinical expertise and our manufacturing knowledge we can bring ideas to life, producing surgical instruments of the highest standard. This service was of interest to Mr David Stanley and Mr Deepthi Nandan Adla (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust), who contacted us regarding a new Shoulder and Elbow Revision Kit they wished to develop.

During our initial meeting Mr Stanley explained the current problems being encountered, as there were no instruments specifically made for Shoulder and Elbow Revision surgery. Existing instruments were awkward, as they were originally designed for Hip & Knee Surgery. Therefore due to the relatively large size, they were difficult to use as they restricted his vision. However there was nothing else available.

Our manufacturing knowledge and craftsmanship offered a solution to this problem. Throughout a series of meetings we shared ideas and developed the Sheffield Shoulder & Elbow Revision Kit. By being able to see and feel the prototypes the surgeons could visualise how the instruments would be used, and offer valuable input during the manufacturing stage.

Here's what Mr David Stanley has to say,

"Revision shoulder and elbow arthroplasty surgery is demanding and time consuming. Removal of cement from the humeral shaft and proximal ulna can be difficult due to the relatively small size of the intramedullary canals and the limited visualisation that is possible when instruments are used within these cavities.

In Sheffield, in conjunction with Platts & Nisbett we have produced a series of small chisels and cement splitters with offset handles that allow an improved view of the intramedullary canal during the cement removal process. In addition we have also designed ring curettes, cement extraction hooks and cement plug removers, all of which facilitate the safe and effective removal of cement and preparation of the bony canal. The combination of these instruments as a single set should provide the shoulder and elbow surgeon with greater confidence when undertaking difficult revision procedures."

This kit is manufactured exclusively by Platts & Nisbett, and is proving popular with Upper Limb Surgeons around the country.

Please contact us for more information if you would like to give it a try.

SPAIRE Hip Instruments

SPAIRE Hip Instruments are exclusively Made In Britain by Platts & Nisbett.

The SPAIRE technique (Sparing Piriformis And Internus, Repair Externus) involves a muscle sparing posterior approach to the hip. This technique allows patients to mobilise without any post-operative restriction to their activities.

SPAIRE surgical instruments have been designed in conjunction with Professor John Timperley (Exeter Hip Unit), and are manufactured exclusively under license by Platts & Nisbett. Our skilled Sheffield craftsmen individually hand make each instrument to exacting requirements.

A big thank you to you all for continuing to support genuine British Manufacturing, at a time when the market is flooded with cheaper, lower quality alternatives. We strive to manufacture the highest quality surgical instruments, and these ethics have remained unchanged since our company opened in 1977. We have always selected the best quality stainless steels for our skilled craftsmen to hand craft into the finest surgical instruments in Great Britain. It is so pleasing to see them now being sold not only in the UK but also Worldwide.

Secondly, none of this would be possible without our workforce, who work tirelessly every day to ensure our customers receive only the best. Each and every member of our apprentice trained team makes a valuable contribution every day, continuing to build our reputation as a manufacturer of the finest quality surgical instruments. We continue to invest heavily in their training and are always looking for more skilled surgical instrument makers and engineers to join our team.

Platts & Nisbett British surgical instruments are purchased by supply companies who hold trade accounts with us, as well as UK NHS & Private Sector Hospitals. We also have an established network of Distributors, who work with us to make our surgical instruments available overseas.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all, and we look forward to celebrating our next big milestone of half a century!
